The Southern Legends Entertainment and Performing Arts Hall of Fame was established to honor and preserve southern originating music and it’s heritage. To honor performers who throughout their career in entertainment have made contributions to the advancement, promotion, and education of southern originating music in the 40′s and 50′s and have left an indelible influence on others.
To honor the pioneers who originated the special sound and to preserve that certain style of southern music for future generations. To keep that style of music which originated in the 40′s and 50′s in it’s true form and composition. We honor those who were active in the recording industry. Those who played in official bands of recording artist. Those who were involved in the recording of artist, or those who worked for record companies, and the artist who recorded for the many record companies of that era. Also companies who manufactured records or recording equipment or other equipment related to the music industry and beyond if that company has helped to preserve southern originating music . Also inventors or developers of that special type of sound created in the 40′s and 50′s, in the studio using recording equipment or otherwise related to the development of the music industry.
There are ( 6 ) open category’s , Rock n Roll, Country, Rhythm and Blues, Blues, Bluegrass and Gospel music. Rock a Billy is not a term that was around or used to describe the fusion of country music and blues. It was not an official term to describe what was cat-music, be-bop, country bop or hillbilly cat music. Country Jive is another term of stepped up or Jazzed up country music that was being played in the late 40′s and 50′s by many country artist who liked to mix blues with a country beat. That special sound had no official title until 1952 when Bill Haley recorded a song he wrote entitled ” Rock-a-Beatin-Boogie” in the song Haley keeps shouting “Rock-Rock-Rock”- Everybody”, ” Roll-Roll-Roll-Everybody”. Alan Freed got a copy of the recording, started playing it on WJW out of Cleveland. It’s been said Alan Freed coined the phrase Rock-n-Roll in 1952. Rock-a-Billy came into it’s own many years later. Long after the pure Rock recording’s of the 50′s gave way to the Lolly Pop and Roses style that came along starting in 1960.
The Southern Legends Association Foundation
( The Southern Legends Association ) operates The Southern Legends Entertainment and Performing Arts Hall of Fame. From the Southern Legends Association are the board of directors who operate The SLHOF, they are in charge of the nominating committee which selects those to be honored into The SLHOF. All aspects of The SLHOF day to day operation is done by The Southern Legends Association. Any input for or about The SLHOF must be done through The southern legends association. There are various committee’s and subcommittee’s operating The SLHOF, all stemming from the Chairman of the Board and the President which oversees the operation of The Southern Legends Association and The SLHOF. Non-performing category-sidemen-songwriters,producers,disc- jockeys,recording executives, journalist. Other industry professional, who have had major influences on Southern Originating music and it’s heritage. Early Influences- artist whose music had a profound impact on the evolution of the music of the 50′s, including rock-n -roll, country, rhythm and blues, blues, bluegrass and gospel music. Side Men – musicians who have spent most of their career out of the spotlight, performing as backup musicians in recording sessions, and on stage, who had part in creating the music that everyone is familiar with, however the public didn’t know the session musicians by name. A committee of A&R, Recording Engineers, and Producers make these selections in this category. The candidate / nominee, must have been born in the south or have spent considerable time living in the south, or has received a state of national acclaim for achievement in the field of Southern Originating Music and it’s heritage. The Lifetime Achievement Award will be periodically paid as a special tribute to a ” Southern Legend “. The education of southern original music and it’s heritage is of most importance to The SLHOL. The music that was originated in the south in the 40′s and 50′s has had a profound influence on the entire world, it’s changed the way everyone listened to music forever. That style of music opened the door for self expression about the way we looked at life, from then till now. It’s started an evolution of life styles for teenagers that had never happened before. New fads came of the styles of music, hair do’s, clothes, shoes, hats, the way the teens talked and acted.The music brought new life to drive inn restaurants, drive inn movies, and the movie industry. Everything was different just from one style of music started in the south. Bill Haley just might have gotten the fad going, however Elvis took it to the launching pad and blasted the music past the stars. After Elvis nothing was ever the same again. The Southern Legends Entertainment and Performing Arts Hall of Fame is about ” The True History ” of southern originating music and it’s heritage. If you want to know what happened in those magical days of the 40′s and 50′s and why they will never pass our way again. If you want to know about the accomplishments of the artist of that music, the time frame they accomplished it in, you have come to the right place, we know it, we live it, we will share it with you. The southern legends Entertainment and Performing Arts Hall of Fame are proud to have had so many artist and performers to come out of the south with so many of them becoming known the world over for their accomplishments. We are equally proud of those ” Southern Legends ” who spent their careers promoting, expanding and improving southern originating music locally,regionally and nationally, who did not become internationally known, but have made outstanding contributions to southern originating music and it’s heritage. Election to The Southern Legends Entertainment and Performing Arts Hall of Fame is recognition of a historical record,that the person inducted is a pioneer of southern originating music or the performing arts, and their performances are timeless and they will always be remembered as southerners who aimed high and reached the brass ring. Also their style of music is a historical record that shows they made southern originating music and performing a never to be forgotten work of art that will be remembered forever. The style of music they helped to introduce to America and the world will live as long as mankind exist in the universe to hear it.
